An audit of warehouse operations can reveal excessive handling costs, unnecessary delays in shipping, and customer service problems. A typical operations audit begins at the receiving dock. Common problems found at the receiving dock include improper scheduling; an insufficient number of, or improperly equipped, dock dorrs; inadequate training of receiving personnel; lack of support for receliving personnel; poor torms design; and poor information flow. Improvements in other warehouse operations include computer directed stock put-away and replenishment, more efficient picking, zoning and slotting, separation of damaged goods, proper sequencing, tailoring the conveyor pick vehicle, and checking and packing.
