Successful attainment of concentrated, stable cellulose solutions in sodium hydroxide or in other alkaline metal hydroxides could possibly eliminate the viscose process as a method for manufacturing fibres. The objectives of this study were to investigate, first, cellulose III solubility in sodium hydroxide solution, and, second, the influence of selected organic compounds on the solubility, as well as to study the degree of polymerization and structure of cellulose fractions precipitated from the solution.
