Intensive work is in hand to modernize the Indian silk industry and improve its products. Faced with serve competition from Chinese and Japanese superior quality, Indian silk suffers from several well-known devects and handicaps. With more scientific input and modern management, a technological orientatin is eing given exports. There is considerable scope for cooperation with the various silk producing countries of East Asia and for joint programmes for mutual benefit.
