Internationl sourcing and subcontracting by European clothing manufacturers has grown rapidly in recent years. Research conducted for OETH (L'Observatoire European du Textile et de l'Habillement)-based on interviews with 165 clothing manufacturers and 53 textile manufacturers in six EC countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK)-shows that in 1983 about 28 of EC turnover came from products maufactured in other countries. By 1992 it had grown to 40, based on this sample. Faced with increased pressure on selling prices and rising domestic production costs, EC clothing manufacturers are being forced to step up production in low-cost countries. So far, internationalization by textile manufacturers has focused mostly on sourcing grey farics. However, this could change as the international buying policies of major retailers tempt EC textile producers to set up faric production in East Asia.
