Federal environmental regulations will have an increasing effect on the coating industry. Inresponse, many companies are changing from solvent borne coatings to emulsion polymer based coatings to decrease the production of volatile organic chemicals. The most improtant of these coatings are latexes and acrylic polymers. However, curing or crosslinking is necessary to achieve optimal performance. Crosslinking generates pollutants, particularly formaldehyde, and has proved to be difficult to replace with nonpolluting processes. However, companies can opt for noncrosslinking or external crosslinking processes when a low degree fo crossinking is satisfactory. A major disadvantage of external crosslinking, and many of the other alternative systems, is cost.
