The procustion of silk fabrics in India is a cottage industry. The domestic merket for finished silk fabrics is large and consumes 85 percent of production. Primary products include saris, dress fabrics, apparel, and interior fabrics. Silk finishing is a decentralized industry. Degumming and dyeing of silk fabrics occurs in open becks. Weavers usually dye silk yarns. Silk is printed by either a block or a screen printing method. Fixation is performed in domestically designed steamers. Direct printing or discharge printing techniques use acid or metal complex dyes. Chemical finishing improves such properties as drape, hand, luster, and wash and wear characteristics.
