Auburn University researchers are focusing their efforts on developing methods of removing contaminants from textile efflent before cleanup and disposal become a concern. The removal of dyes by oxidative methods will reduce pollution at the source within the textile plant, thus making cleanup more effective and less costly than conventional wastewater treatment methods. Oxidation removes color by breaking down or decomposing the dye molecules. ALthough it is not a new idea, oxidative water treatment has not been fully developed and implemented in textile processing plants. It is not being practiced now because textile manufacturers need a practical, cost effective wastewater treatment process. Ozonation, ultraviolet light, and chlorination are the three oxidative processes under study at Auburn University.
