BTTG researchers are investigating the potential of microfungal fimaments in the detection of metal pollutants in industrial waste effluent. BTTG's Shirley Science Centre alrady has shown the benefits of waddings in absorbing a wide variety of metals from solution. One line of research seeks to exploit this property by creating a filter system that strips the metal pollutants from the waste before it is discharged. A second line of research seeks the use of waddings in a sensor system to detect spills of such metals as lead, copper, and cadmium. The absorption of the metals should alter the microfungal material's mass and ability ot conduct or store delctricity. If these changes can be detected, the fungal material would have considerable potential as a detector.
