According to a survey condusted by the National Association for Plastic Container Recovery (NAPCOR), consumers recycled 450 million pounds of PET in 1993, an increase of 23 percent over 1992. Robert A. Bennett, an associate dean at the University of Toledo's Engineering School, conducted the NAPCOR survey, which found that postconsumer PET recycling in 1993 reached an all time high: 30 percent of domestic PET bottle grade resin production. The NAPCOR survey also found that PET containers are collected by more the 3,100 curbside collection programs that serve more than 27 million United States households. Bennett indicated that demand for postconsumer PET could reach 1 billion pounds by 1997, prompted by further gains in recycling and the recent introduction of such manmade fibers as Trevira II, an apparel fiber made from a 50/50 blend of virgin polyester and recycled PET.
