The value of output from the Chinese textile industry was $29.4 million between January 1993 and August 1993, which represented an increase of 8.47 percent compared with same period in 1992. This increase is a result of growth in demand by both domestic and world markets, improved finishing that adds more value to the end product, and increases in the costs of raw materials that are passed on the the consumers. Textile exports between January 1993 and August 1993 increased by 5.9 prcent compared with same period in 1992. Imports declined by 13 percent. The textile industry is the major earner of foreign currency for China. Wool is a major raw material that China is currently unable to supply in sufficient quantities. For that an dother reasons, the price of wool has increased. Demand for worsted fabrics is strong among the more afluent consumers in China.
