International trade data released by the United States Department of Commerce indicate that 1993 exports of textiles and apparel reached an unprecedented $10.7 billion, but did not offset a record $42.2 billion in imports-resulting in an overall trade deficit of $31.5 billion, another record. During November 1993, 1.3 billion square meter equivalents of textiles and apparel entered the United States, the largest monthly amount ever recorded. Positive developments included a 17 percent increase in exports to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean Basin ($5.7 billion). Import statistics were dominated by six countries (China, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Turkey) that, according to American Texile Manufacturers Institute president Henry A. Truslow III, have refused to put forth realistic plans for open markets in connection with the Uruguay Round trade agreement.
