The American Institute of Chemical Engineers identified and described existing VOC control technologies and regulations. The most popular VOC controls were thermal and catalytic oxidazers, flares, condeensers, and adsorbers. Absorbers and boilers/process heaters were less effective controls and are used less often. Biofiltration, membrane separation, and ultraviolet oxidation technologies have only recently become commercially available. Two technologies, corona destruction and plasma technology, are still under development. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 are accelerating research, development, and utilization of new VOC controls. Control system design is influenced by the type of emission source, flow rate, VOC category, and VOC concentration. 9 refs.
