Microfibers are fibers with single filaments finer than 1 dtex. Fine microfibers have counts ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 dtex. Superfine microfibers have counts below 0.5 dtex. Manufacturing uses two different extrusion technologies: direct extrusion and conjugate extrusion. Further subclassifications of direct extrusion are high sppeed extrusion, spin draw, and partially oriented extrusion followed by drawing and texturing. Modifications to convention extrusion machines and the precise control of production parameters are critical to extruding microfibers. A production paramentrs are ciritcal to spinning minimzes clearances and optimizes the flow holes in the spinneret are critcal to achieve a uniform cross section and processability. Low, uniform Uster denier irregularity values are critical to achieve satisfactory dye uptake. 3 refs.
