Because PCB is highly toxic, waste PCB cannot be incinerated safely. Researchers seeking alternative means incinerated safely. Researchers seeking alternative means of PCB disposal copolymerized PCB with tetrabutyl orthotitianate at room temperature under filtered fluorescentlamps. After one week, 93 percent of the PCB had combined with the tetrabutyl orthotitanate into a harmless and stable dompound. Infrared relfcetance spctra of the PCB/tetrabutyl orthotitanate copolymer revealed that the process of polymerization removed the chlorine atoms from PCB, rendering the compound safe for disposal. 11 refs.
