World fiber consumption rose only 1.3 percent in 1992, a growth rate significantly slower than in the 1980s. A decline in the production of wool and cellulosic fibers, however, was offset by increased production of synthetic fibers. Despite an ever widening trade gap, the United States textile industry continuing recession in Western Europe, however, hampered import growth. Only India, Indonesia, and Poland made inroads into the European Union textile market in 1992, In Asia, Japan's Iabor costs have risen sharply due to the strong yen. Exports from Hong Kong, Sough Korea, and Taiwan have declined due to toughter competition from India and Indonesia. In textile machinery. spinning equipemtn deliveries declined but demand increased for shuttleless looms.
