In printing the major application of CAD is in proofing a design. CAD is able to replace manual operations to a large extent. Proofing a design involves the evaluation of the design repeat and the color of the design. Manual proofing occurs after the design has been color-separated and the screens have been engraved. All changes are very costily because new color separations and new screens are required. Manual proofing generally involves the production of many samples. With CAD, designers can proof anytime during production. Proofing with CAD facilitates marketing becaus design sample can go back and forth quickly and easily between the designer and buyer. The major problem associated with CAD in proofing is the quality of the image and the constancy of the color.
