A longitudinal strudy conducted on workers in the cotton and manmade fiber industries examined respiratory symptoms over a three-year period. Significantly more workers exposed to cotton dust developed symptoms than workers exposed to manmade fiber dust. These symptoms included chronic bronchitis, nonbyssiontic chest tightness, and shortness of breath. However, only shortnes of breath remained significantly higher after three years. Both study groups demonstrated symptom variation during these years. The majority of subjects with byssionsis were male, worked in the dustiest areas, and were exposed for more than 20 years. Those who exhibited symptoms on the first day of the workweek tended to develop byssinosis. 12 refs.
