Naturally colored and organic cottons. have established small, consumer-driven niched within the natrual fibers market. A major shift in consumer values represented by environmentalism seems to ensure the market share and profitability of these niches. Farmers are beginning to devote some acreage to niche cottons, attracted by the precmium price they command and the opportunity to avoid encironmental and health hazards through the elimination of agrichemicals. Textile manufacturers and retail companies have found that consumers of niche cotton products are willing to pay a certain premium and that they hold companies responsibel for the environmental integrity as well as the quality of their products. 56 refs.
