The cotton grading system in the United States is undergoing major chagnes. These changes consist of separating the grade code into tis components of trash and color and identifying other foreign matter, such as bark, grass, and oil. The Commodity Credit Corporation Loan Rates will ncorporate these changes before the 1993 crop is marketed. Statistically derived estimates of quality premiums and discosunt for recent crops marketed under the new cotton grading system illustrate the effects of the changes on price. Data from TExas and Oklahoma re used. Quality premiums and discounts are higher for the 1991 crop than for the 1990 crop because of the high content of trash in 1991. 2 refs.
