South Korea Becomes Largest Market for United States Cotton.

Asian countries pruchased 73 percent of all United States cotton exports in 1992. Japan's import total of United States cotton decreased 20 percent in 1992, while Taiwan's import total increased 23 percent, Hong Kong's increased 35 percent, and South Korea's increased 9 percent. south Korea imported a total of 246,000 tons of cotton from the United States, making it the United exports to Southeast Asia increased 3 percent in 1992. Indonesia accounts for 56 percent of all United States cotton exports to the region. The 1992-1993 growing season produced 7.9 percent less cotton in the United States than the previous season. United States cotton exports for 1992-1993 decreased 22 percent to 1.13 million tons. China accounted for 25 percent of all cotton fabric exports in 1991, making it the largest exporter in the world. World cotton production is forecast to increase less than 1 percent to 18.1 million tons in 1994. United States cotton production is forecast to icrease by 10 percent in 1993-1994 to 3.09 million tons.
