In 1993, United States mill consumption of manufactured fibers increased 5 percent compared with a 3 percent increase in the mill consumption of cotton and a 4 percent increase in the mill consumption of wool. Nylon fiber consumption increased 8 percent and polyester fiber consumption increased 5 percent. Cotton decreased its market share of total mill consumption. In 1993, manufactured fibersaccounted for 67 percent of toal mill consumption whereas cotton accounted for 32 percent and wool remained the same at 1 percent. Exports of manufactured, cotton, and wool fibers increased to 2,009 million punds, 7 percent above the 1992 level of 1,870 million pounds. Imports increased to 6,006 million pounds, representing 32 percent of total mill consumption. Data on 1993 consumption of manufactured, cotton, and wool fibers are tabulated.
