Researchers used p-NMR spectroscopy to quantitatively determine the dispribution of EO oligomer adducts in n-alcohol ethoxylates. The researchers added one drop of n-alcohol ethoxylate to a NMR tube containing 0.5 millimiter of deuterated chloroform. Key parameters for the proton scan were: time domain, 16k; number of scans, 16; proton pulse width, 30 degrees; acquisition and delay times, 9 seconds; spectral line broadening, 1 hertz; and receiver gain, maximum. The researchers established a baseline for calibration by averaging data from ten repetitive analyses of hexaethylene glycon mono n-dodecyl ether. Results indicated that p-NMR spectroscopy accurately characterized the distribution of EO oligomers in linear n-alcohol ethoxylates. Branched n-alcohol ethyoxylates, however, produced spurious data. 6 refs.
