In piped fluid systems, properties of the fluids inside and outside the pipe govern the heat loss dynamics of the system. If the pipe wall temperature is not unusually high, most of the heat loss in through convenction. A four step Hilpert correlation determines the rate of thermal dissipation per unit length, which in turn permits quantification of the optimum amount of insulation that should be added to the pipe. The Hilpert equation derives from four parameter: the Nusselt number, a ratio of total heat transfer to conductive hat transfer for the interanal for the internal fluid; the thermal conductivity of the external fluid; the diameter of the pipe; the Reynolds number for the flow outside the pipe; and the Prandtl number, a ratio of momentum transfer to heat transfer. 2 refs.
