RH is the most commonly overlooked factor in air conditioning systems. If RH is maintained within an acceptable range, problems stemming from fungus and mold are minimal, viruses and bacteria die soon after entering the building, workers are more comfortable, and energy costs are lower. Proper humidity control can increase employee productivity and satisfaction, lower sick-time expense and increase the life of equipment and frunishings. Building RH should be maintained year round at between 40 and 60 percent. When RH fails below 40 percent, bacterial growth, respiratory infections, and allergic reactions increase. Above 60 percent, bacteria, mold, dust mites, allergic reactions, and chemical interactions increase. Causes of poor air quality include ventilation system problems; interanl, outdoor, and boilogical contaminants; and furnishings and finishes. RH control methods include heat pipes, heat exchangers, and dehumidification.
