The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 lists n-hexane, the most common solvent used in cottonseed extraction, as a hazardous air pollutant because of its flammability. Although many alternative solvents have been tested, most have not met industrial requirements. In the short-term, branched and short chain alkane mixtures containing less than 20 percent hexane have potential. The use of these mixtures requires very little, of any, retrofitting. In the long-term, short chain alcohols, particularly ethanol and isopropanol, have potential. However, the presence of water greatly decreases the oil solvency of these alcohols, which solubilize both water and any water soluble compounds in the cottonseed. Although this water solubility increases purification requirements, the extraction of such previously inaccessible compounds as aflatoxin is possible. 3 refs.
