A review of different polymerization methods for superabsorbent polymrs (SAPs) focuses on manufacturing processes. Primary applications for SAPs include diapers, panty liners, sanitary napkins, tampons, and incontinence pads. Te commercial polymer derives from acrylic acid and a crosslinker in aqueous solution. Sodium hydroxide neutralizes the polymer either before or after polymerization. Redox and thermal free-radical initiators, chelating agents, chain transfer agents, and grafting monomers all influence the kinetics of the polymerization reaction. Polymerization of the monomer solution occurs sometimes in suspension within a hydrocarbon continuous phase. After polymerization, milling converts the resulting product into particle form for commercial use. Abstract.
