World consumption of textile fibres is expected to rise by 4.5 a year to reach over 51 million tonnes in 1997, according to a report from US analyst The Freedonia Group. However, production is expected to increase at a slightly slower rate. This is because depressed demand in 1992 resulted in alrge stock-piles of nearly all types of fibers. The greatest growth in production will occur in the developing regions of Asia and Latin America. Fibre demand in developed regions such as North America, Western Europe and Japan is expected to benefit as the economy recovers from the recession. The improved blending of natural and man-made fibres to produce finished textile products will benefit both segments.
