Akzo Nobel is constructing a new para-aramid facility in Emmen, the Netherlands. When completed, the new plant will increase Akzo's Twaron fiber production capacity by 50 percent to 10,500 tons per year. Twaron pulp now accounts for about one-half of Akzo's aramid output. Much of the pulp is being directed into friction materials where it is gaining acceptance as a superior replacement for asbestos. Its heat resistance and frictional behavior make it suitable for such end uses as clutch plate facings, brake linings, and gaskets. In the United States, Twaron is subject to a severe antidumping tariff that is preventing the growth of its use in that country. Worldwide, however, consumption of Twaron is growing at an annual rate of 8 percent. Growth rates for the fiber are particularly strong in Europe and the Far East. The world market for para-aramid fibers is currently approximately 20,000 tons per year, according to Akzo. Twaron can be used as an alternative to steel cord reinforcement in tires. The material is lighter than steel and carries a greater load bearing capacity.
