The introduction of HVI tests to classify United States cotton has demonstrated the importance of fiber quality, particularly fiber strength. In a study of cotton fiber strength, researchers correlated cellulose molecular weight distribution with this property. The study involved the dissolution of cotton fibers composed mostly of cellulose in the solvent N,N-dimethylacetamide with lithium chloride. Automated, nonaqueous gel permeation chromatography determined the molecular weight distributions. The researchers sampled HVI calibration standard cotton with a range of fiber strengths and lengths. Molecular compositional profiles indicated a correlation between high average molecular weights and superior strength in cotton fibers. 23 refs.
