An overview of the current ultrafine microfiber industry reveals that fiber producers are unveiling a wide range of new products as well as expanding their markets. Kanebo Limited has developed the Belima X ultrafine microfiber (0.1 dpf), as well as Belima T, the first randomly thick/thin ultrafine microfiber. Both microfibers are produced by dividing a special polyester/nylon bicomponent filament into 17 parts. Although apparel continues to dominate the end uses of Kanebo's ultrafine microfibers, nongarment usage (especially for high tech wipes) is increasing. Asahi Chemical Industries has developed Besaylon, an ultrafine microfiber produced using a direct spinning method, that features high dimensional stability and excellent colorfastness. New ultrafine microfibers have also been developed by Mitsubishi Rayon and Unitika Limited. Kuraray Company has developed an artificial leather fabric made from ultrafine microfibers.
