The Irish Linen Guild represents all sectors of the linen industry in Ireland, from spinning to finishing. The objective of the guild is to assist the industry in maintaining high quality and achieving international competitiveness. The guild has registered its logo as a trademark for use by its members. Reseasrch and development focuses on the improvement of production technology and end products. The industry empolys about 5,000 people, and about 50 percent of productaion is exported, contibuting significantly to the domestic economy. Consumption of linen has increased strongly throughout the world, encouraging further expansion. An overivew of Irish linen companies describes operations at Moygashel, Baird McNutt, Ulster Weavers, and Herdmans.
