The leaf curl virus is a leading cause of reduced cotton yeidls in pakistan, especilly in the Punjab region. Whiteflkes are responsible for spreading the vrus. common symptoms, such as severe vein thickening and leaf curling, interfere with photosynthesis and result in poor plant growth and the shedding of buds, floweres, and small bolls. Yiedl losses of 20 percent are common, but losses of up to 80 percent have been reported. The use of insecticides to limit the white fly population and control the virus has resulted in only limited successes. A more effective control strategy would be a multidisciplinary approach that emphaizes the development of cotton varieties resistant to the virus, the elimination of alternative host plants, and genetic research. 3 refs.
