The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Helath (NIOSH) defined research needs and research strategies for the identification and prevention of lung diseses caused by fibers, including asbestos. The research needs included fiber characterization, fiber analysis, the investigastion of biological activity and the mechanisms of disease, epidemiological investigations, and the vealuation of exposure control methods. The strategies adopted by NIOSH included the funding of research investigating disease mechanisms, epidemiological studies to assess human risk, and the role of in vivo and in vitro studies.
