Common methods of textile recycling include landfilling, material recycling (down cyclling), raw material recycling, back to root recycling, thermal recycling, and biological degradation combinations. TITK investigated alternative methods of textile recycling, focusing on textile blends. The company beilives that separating the components of textile blends results results in recycled products of higher value based on nearly pure fiber materials. TITK tested the following mehtods of separation in laboratory tests: thermal treatment of 50/50 RES/CV staple fiber and tearing-pneumatic purification; chemical treatment of 50/50 PES/CV, PAN/CV, and PA/CV staple fiber without mechanical stress, and pneumatic purification; enzymatic treatment; treatment with mold fungi; and soil burial. Data showing costs for individual steps, processing times, degradation and separation rates, and damage rates of the blending components are tabulated. Thermal and chemical treaments take relatively short times, but often involve some damage to the blending partner. Microbiological treatments provided undamaged blending partners, but required additional washing and rinsing precesses for disin. Positive results were achieved with enzymatic treatment.
