Exports of textiles and apparel from China have grown significantly from $17 billion in 1991 to over $20 billion in 1993. In particular, exports of apparel are experiencing strong growth, accounting for 63 percent of all textiles exported. Changs in world trade, such as Chinese membership in the World Trade Organization, will probably contribute to further growth because the majority of China's current trading partners have signed the GATT agreement. However, the apparel and textile industries in China remain beset by many problems, particularly the low quality of many products, which significantly lowers competitiveness in many sectors. Other problems include a shortage of raw cotton and silk.
