The historically high value of the yen is currently causing many problems for Japanese industry, particularly small exporters of textiles. The high yen has also resulted in a significant increase in imports the domestic market. Until the increase in the value of the yen, strong domestic demand supported the Japanese textile and apparel industries. Imports are weakening that support, particularly for the domestic yarn manufacturers. Most Japanese companies respond to the competition with heightened survival strategies that include off shore production and the manufacture of specialty products not available from imports. The Japanese textile and apparel industries must carefully track and respond to consumer trends to maintain competitiveness.
