General economic recovery continuous in the United States. Overall performance in the textile and apparel industries has been stable and productivity has increased, but performance in the yarn and greige fabric production sectors has declined. The apparel markets suffered unexpected setbacks in 1993 due to natural disasters, which disrupted distribution, ans a diversion of spending to durable goods. The new GATT agreement, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the globalization of trade introduced a substantial amount of uncertainty and difficulty. Competition with low cost producers forced some companies, especially fiber manufacturers, to abandon commodity production in favor of specialized products. Powerful retailers have become the most important influence in the textile supply chain.
