A report updates textiel and apparel consumption and trade statistics for the developed countries as published by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. The statistics include yearly consumption data through 1992 for the United States, Japan, and 12 European countries, and consumption forecasts for the years between 1995 and 2002. The report indicates that consumption in the United States has risen to record levels, one-third higher than in Japan and 50 percent higher than in the European Union (EU). Consumption was slightly higher than expected in the EU. Imports of apparel and other fabric products into Germany have increased dramatically. Combined EU, Japanese, and United States textileel and apparel consumption statistics reveal a net trade deficit with the developing countries, the Former Sovit Union, and Eastern Europe.
