A recent survey by the Swiss Cotton Institute determined the influence of environmental concerns on the fabric and apparel buying habits of 1,700 consumers. The survey revealed that quality, style, ease of care, and price are much more important consumer concerns than environmentally responsible production. Only 5.8 percent of those questioned considered environmental issues when buying fabric products. Those consumers who considered environmental criteria important were more likely to reject synthetic fibers and were concerned about formaldehyde content and the potential hazards of dyes and finishes. Most of the surveyed consumers expressed a desire for accurate information about apparel and fabric production processes, a need that is being addressed by the Oeko-Tex initiative. 5 refs.
