The major strategies for recycling textiles in Germany are waste conversion into energy and waste reclamation. Researchers used the example of wool/polyester production wastes to examine waste reclamation processes and the quality of the reclaimed waste. The samples included woven fabrics, stitch bonded fabrics, and laminated fabrics. The researchers measured the forces acting on the samples during opening, which is the most important stage in reclamation. The objective was to establish a relationship between the force used to open the samples and the quality of the reclaimed fiber. The dimension and type of the sample were critical in determining the force required to yield a satisfactory end prouduct. 3 refs.
