Significant quantities of carpets are disposed of annually by landfill, incineration, recycling, and downcycling. Landfill and incineration are becoming increasingly untenable because of costs and pollution. Recycling is problematic because of the difficulty involved in separating the carpet components. Downcycling, which recycles carpet into products other than carpet, is more feasible. Research at Eduard Kusters Maschinenfabrik GmbH && Company is focusing on the development of a downcycling process that converts carpet scrap into boards. The process uses uncleaned, unseparated carpet scrap, which significantly reduces costs. The most important operations are opening, shredding, and pressing into boards. 1 ref.
