Recycling textiles involves the recovery of either the waste from textile production, the textile itself after disposal, the raw materials separated from the textile after disposal, or energy generated from textile waste. Production waste from spinning, weaving, knitting, and apparel manufacture is readily recyclable to a number of applications, such as filling material in mattresses or padding materials in automobiles. Recycling after disposal depends on the complexity of the textile. The more components that comprise the structure of the textile, the more difficult is recycling. Recycling apparel, carpets, and automotive fabrics illustrates various recycling strategies. The oldest recycling strategy, recycling secondary raw materials for carded yarn spinning, is still a viable option. 1 ref.
