Renewed interest in natural vegetable-stalk fibres, particularly hemp, on the part of industrial textile engineers, is reported. The history of hemp production and use is reviewed. Its decline since the end of World War II was brought about by the rapid rise of synthetic fibres. The potential for US production of hemp, standards and labelling for hemp products and the effect of GATT on the hemp trade are discussed.
