The historical development of linen production and the current status of the Irish linen industry are considered. New finishes have been developed which completely alter the handle and drape of the fabric. Soft washed linen, waxed waterproof lines and new dyeing methods extend the traditional product range. The natural qualities of linen which make it an ecologically appropriate fabric are also outlined.
