A presentation at the Third International Conference on Textile Coating and Laminating highlighted the significance of recycling industrial fabrics. At Akzo, a recycling project investigated the use of seat belts as a source of glass fiber reinforced fabric to be reused in automotive upholstery and as a raw material for the production of high tenacity polyester filament yarns. Researchers at Akzo have also investigated the depolymerization of nylon 6 in order to recycle industrial fabric into the manmade fiber extrusion process (at the fiber feedstock stage). If a procedure were found that would permit the quantitative segregation of nylon fabric and polyvinyl chloride conating agents, the fabric could be supplied to yarn manufacturers and the coating to fabric finishers. Regulations in the Federal Republic of Germany provide specifications regarding the storage, handling, incineration, and disposal of coated industrial fabrics.
