Most of the volume generated by staple fiber production is manmade staple fibers, but wool and cotton are also importnat staple fibers worldwide. The major objective of manmade staple fiber production has historically been to simulate natural staple fiber properties. Cotton and woolen processing systems typically process both natural and manmade staple fibers. Since the 1970s, polyester staple fiber has dominated the sector, followed by nylon. Currently, abut 50 percent of manmade fiber production is staple fiber. Although the sector continues to grow, it is nevertheless linked with other sectors, notably cotton. Because cotton is frequently blended with polyester, any change in cotton prices affects those of polyester.
