Compact spinning lines for staple fibers range in capacity from 10-50 tons per day and permit frequent changes in denier and color. Drawing, crimping, and cutting operations are integrated into these lines. Compact spinning is slower than conventional spinning because of these integrated operations. Increasing the number of holes in each spinneret to up to 70,000 compensates for the low speeds and maintains output. Until recently, compact spinning lines for staple fibers processed only polypropylene fibers. Modifications to these lines now permit nylon and polyethylene terephthalate processing. FARE SpA of Italy manufactures compact spinning lines, notably its Superstaple Ⅱ model, which is capable of processing polypropylene, polyester, and nylon fibers.
