Researchers assessed the effectiveness of different row spacings on the insect infestation level of Stoneville 453 cotton fields in Sunflower County, Mississippi. Plots were replicated four times and arranged in a randomized complete block experimental design. Row spacings varied from 30 to 40 inches in width. Results from tests conducted during the growing seasons of 1992 and 1993 showed that the narrower rows exhibited significantly higher levels of infestation by such pests as the bollworm Helicoverpa zea Boddie and the tobacco budworm Heliothis virescens. According to data from spray table tests and insect bioassays, in-furrow soil treatments and foliar sprays of the insecticide Temik controlled early season insect outbreaks, but were less effective as the growing season progresses. In addition, foliar sprays of Temik did not adequately penetrate the dense leaf canopies of the most narrowly spaced plants. 5 refs.
