In Europe, the most important recycled raw materials include manmade fabrics and wool/synthetic mixtures. Used apparel is the primary source of recycled wool. Acrylic and hosiery wastes and discarded apparel are the primary sources of synthetic materials. The recycling industry is particularly strong in Holland, Germany, Belgium, and France. Waste sorters separate the materials into those suitable for secondhand apparel, fiber recycling, industrial wipers, and trash. Africa and Hong Kong are important markets for secondhand apparel. Prices for used apparel vary greatly, depending on demand and quality. The principal use for recycled fibers are mattresses and upholstery felts, automotive components, and carpet underlays. The cleaning industry is the primary market for industrial wipes. Sorters separate the wipes into four quality grades, and prices range from 120 to 800 pounds sterling per ton.
