BASF, in cooperation with Shred-Tech, has developed a recycling process that converts nylon 6 carpet waste to its original raw material, caprolactam. The closed recycling process comprises six steps: collection, separation, monomer recovery, polymerization, yarn spinning, and carpet manufacturing. BASF is working closely with other sectors of the carpet industry to develop the infrastructure required for the collection and separation stages. Shred-Tech, which has more than 15 years of experience fabricating materials handling equipment for recycling, designed and installed the carpet separation process equipment. Chemical conversion of nylon 6 to caprolactam, its monomer, has been practiced by BASF for 30 years. Once the recovered caprolactam has been obtained, its is converted to nylon 6 carpet yarns using conventional polymerization and extrusion technologies.
